Spider John Koerner, traditional American folk blues artist, rhythm-snapping guitarist, song-crafter, singer and living legend, was by far the most original of those 1960s white blues guys, a brilliantly entertaining live performer, and my first real musical hero. He’s in his 70s now, and is a true American national treasure: it’s long past the time that he got more recognition - Ian Anderson (fRoots magazine).

In 2012, Hornbeam invited Spider and his fiddle and bones player Chip Taylor Smith into the London analogue studio of Marco Nelson while they were on tour in the UK. The result, direct to tape in glorious mono, is an album to treasure.

Robin Denselow, The Guardian (****) - This new recording shows that he hasn’t lost his “unbelievably funky guitar style”.

Stephen Hunt, fRoots magazine - It’s thrilling to hear something that sounds so entirely spontaneous and uncontrived. I’ll be very surprised if anything keeps this from being among the first entries on my Critic’s Poll list this year.

about

Spider John Koerner Minneapolis, Minnesota

Spider first hit fame in the early 1960s as a member of folk blues trio Koerner, Ray & Glover. They made a great series of Blues, Rags & Hollers albums for Elektra which even the Beatles admitted to being fans of, and stormed events like the Newport Folk Festival.
